Teacher Registration (Accreditation of Initial Teacher Education Programs) Amendment Regulations 2026
Made by the Governor in Executive Council.
These regulations come into operation as follows —
(a)regulations 1 and 2 — on the day on which these regulations are published on the WA legislation website;
(b)the rest of the regulations — on the day after that day.
These regulations amend the Teacher Registration (Accreditation of Initial Teacher Education Programs) Regulations 2012.
(1)In regulation 3 delete the definition of education provider and insert:
education provider means any of the following —
(a)Curtin University established under the Curtin University Act 1966 section 5;
(b)Edith Cowan University established under the Edith Cowan University Act 1984 section 4;
(c)Murdoch University established under the Murdoch University Act 1973 section 4;
(d)The University of Notre Dame Australia established under the University of Notre Dame Australia Act 1989 section 4;
(e)The University of Western Australia established under the University of Western Australia Act 1911 section 3;
(f)any other registered higher education provider as defined in the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency Act 2011 (Cth) section 5, that is established in Western Australia;
(2)In regulation 3 in the definition of program delete “(Commonwealth)” and insert:

(1)Before regulation 4(1) insert:
(1A)In this regulation —
Southern Cross University means the university established under the Southern Cross University Act 1993 (NSW) section 4.
(2)In regulation 4(2):
(a)delete “2026 —” and insert:
2027 —
(b)delete paragraph (c) and insert:
(c)the Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Teaching awarded by Edith Cowan University;
(d)the Graduate Diploma in Education awarded by Curtin University;
(e)the Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary Teaching) awarded by Murdoch University;
(f)the Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary Teaching) awarded by Murdoch University;
(g)the Graduate Diploma of Education (Early Childhood) awarded by Southern Cross University;
(h)the Graduate Diploma of Teaching awarded by Southern Cross University.
In regulation 5(4) delete “subregulation (3)(b)” and insert:
subregulation (3)(c)
(1)Before regulation 10(1) insert:
(1A)In this regulation —
level, followed by a number, in relation to a qualification, means the level designated with that number under the Australian Qualifications Framework (as defined in the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (Cth) Schedule 1 clause 1(1)).
(2)Delete regulation 10(2) and insert:
(2)The Board may accredit a program if —
(a)the Board is satisfied as to the following —
(i)the program leads to a qualification of level 7 or 8;
(ii)if the program leads to a level 7 qualification — the duration of the program is ordinarily at least 4 years (full‑time or part‑time equivalent) of higher education study;
(iii)if the program leads to a level 8 qualification — the duration of the program is ordinarily at least 1 year (full‑time or part‑time equivalent) of higher education study;
(iv)the program requires a student to successfully complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education in accordance with the accreditation standard approved by the Minister on 26 March 2026 under section 118B of the Act;
(v)the program includes at least 1 year (full‑time or part‑time equivalent) of professional teacher education content;
(vi)the program includes at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice undertaken at a primary or secondary school or in an early childhood education setting;
and
(b)the Board is of the opinion that —
(i)the content of the program is sufficiently similar to the content of programs accredited under subregulation (1); and
(ii)the program is suitable for accreditation.
In regulation 18(1) delete “(Commonwealth).” and insert:
(Cth).
In regulation 25(1) renumber paragraph (ab) as paragraph (aa).
